1What is orthopaedics?
Orthopaedics is a surgical speciality that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of injuries, conditions and disorders that affect the bones, muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves. The doctors that work in this field are called Orthopaedic Surgeons.
2When is the right time or age to have surgery?
There is no right time or age for deciding to undergo surgery. Your doctor and the orthopaedic surgeon will help determine whether or not you need surgery.
3How long does it normally take to recover from orthopaedic surgery?
Duration of recovery depends entirely on your overall health, your condition and its severity, as well as the type of surgery you have undergone.
4Will there be follow-up appointments after the surgery?
Yes, Dr Wynand Steenkamp will schedule you for a follow-up appointment in order for him to check your wounds and ensure that they are healing properly. If you have a cast or splint in place, these appointments are scheduled to either remove or change the cast.
5Will Dr Steenkamp prescribe pain medication after surgery?
Yes, medication is prescribed after surgery to help ease and relieve pain.
6What is an outpatient procedure?
An outpatient procedure doesn't require an overnight stay at the hospital. You may go home on the same day of surgery.
