LIMB DEFORMITY CORRECTION

Limb deformity correction is a surgical procedure performed to straighten and lengthen a bone that is either bent or twisted in an abnormal way. Limb deformities are musculoskeletal abnormalities that can be congenital (present at birth), developmental, or acquired due to a fracture, infection, arthritis or tumour.

Limb lengthening or straightening involves an orthopaedic surgeon attaching an internal rod, metal plate, or external fixator or frame to the affected limb to lengthen and correct it.

When is limb deformity correction indicated?

Limb deformity correction is indicated when leg deformities begin to cause complications such as difficulties walking, pain and dysfunction. This can lead to secondary complications such as tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and medial tibial stress syndrome, as well as metatarsalgia.

Limb deformity reconstruction and correction’s goal is to enhance the leg’s functionality by reconstructing the leg through lengthening or straightening the bone. This procedure can be completed in a single surgery or in multiple surgeries over a gradual period if the deformity is complex.

What does limb deformity correction and reconstruction surgery entail?

During limb deformity correction, you will be under general anaesthesia. Dr Steenkamp will make an incision above the deformed bone and cut across the bone to create 2 bone segments. The bone will be positioned correctly and devices such as internal nail, rod or a metal plate will be used to secure the bone in the correct position while it heals. In some cases, soft-tissue procedures may also be done at the same time to allow muscles and nerves to accommodate the correction.

Gradual limb deformity correction involves the orthopaedic surgeon cutting the bone into 2 segments and positioning the bone correctly. He will then use external fixators to hold the alignment of the bone. These external fixators will often be adjusted so that they gradually straighten the bone.
