HAND AND FOOT SURGERY
Hand surgery is a term used to cover different surgical procedures performed to relieve pain and restore hand, finger and wrist function. Hand surgery is normally indicated to treat multiple problems such as:
- Ganglions (small bumps or sacs filled with fluid on the hands and wrists)
- Trigger finger (when the finger is stuck in a bent position)
- Fractures (bone cracks)
- Dislocations (when the ends of the joint are pushed out of place)
- Tendon lacerations (a deep cut on the palm side of the fingers, hand, or wrist)
- Infections
- Carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition where there is pressure on the median nerve in the wrist)
- Foreign bodies (when there is an object in your hand)
- Sports injuries of the hand and wrist
Hand surgery involves a combination of repairing the bone and reconstruction of soft tissues, including the skin, nerves, tendon, muscle and blood vessels. During hand surgery, Dr Steenkamp will make an incision over the affected area to treat the problem. Skin grafts and flaps may also be used.
Foot surgery
Our feet are the foundation of our bodies; therefore, any deformity or malalignment can result in undue stress on the rest of the body's joints. Foot and ankle surgery is an umbrella of different surgical procedures performed to diagnose and treat a variety of foot and ankle conditions, including:
- Bunions (a bony bump that develops on the joint at the base of the big toe)
- Fractures of the ankle and foot
- Hammer toes (this is a deformity that results in your toe bending or curling downwards instead of pointing forward)
- Arthritis (this is the swelling and tenderness of one or more of the joints)
- Morton’s Neuromas (this is when the tissue around the nerves that lead to the toes, thickens).
- Ankle instability (when the ankle feels wobbly or unstable)
- Achilles tendonitis (overuse of the Achilles tendon).
During foot surgery, Dr Steenkamp makes an incision above the affected area in your foot to either reconstruct or repair the problem. Foot surgery will help provide long-lasting pain relief, better function and mobility and improved appearance of your feet.
